Job Search Strategy
How to Find Cybersecurity Jobs Beyond LinkedIn
LinkedIn has become the default job search platform, and for cybersecurity roles, this creates a paradox: the most visible listings attract the most competition, are frequently ghost jobs, and are filtered through ATS systems designed to eliminate rather than identify talent.
Company Career Pages: Underused and More Reliable
Roles listed directly on company career pages are more likely to represent genuine, active searches. Many organisations post to their own site first and push to LinkedIn days or weeks later — or not at all for certain roles.
Build a systematic tracking list of target organisations and check their career pages directly on a weekly basis. Ten targeted companies checked weekly will surface more genuine opportunities than 200 LinkedIn applications.
Security Community Platforms
- CyberSecJobs and ClearanceJobs: Specialist platforms with higher signal-to-noise ratios than general boards
- SANS Jobs Board: Respected among practitioners, with a high concentration of technical roles
- Discord servers for TryHackMe, Hack The Box, and professional communities regularly share legitimate postings
- BSides and DEF CON job boards: Conference-adjacent listings from organisations that hire from the practitioner community
Government and Cleared Roles
Government employment portals list a high volume of cybersecurity roles — many of which are less competitive because candidates are unwilling to navigate the application process. For African markets specifically, government digital transformation programmes and national CERT organisations represent genuine hiring largely absent from mainstream job boards.
Staffing Agencies and MSSPs
MSSPs run SOC operations requiring ongoing analyst headcount — many have established recruitment pipelines that do not rely on job board listings. Building a relationship with a specialist security recruiter can place you in a process before a role is publicly posted.
The Network Strategy That Actually Works
The most reliable non-LinkedIn channel is a professional network built through consistent community participation. Attending BSides events, contributing to open-source projects, and participating in forums with genuine insight creates a network that surfaces opportunities organically.
The best jobs are frequently filled by people who were not actively looking — they were visible, and someone reached out.
